Quote by world renowned artist and curator Bruce Helander:
Carl Lawrence Paoli, channeling his acting talents as a stuntman doubling for stars like Patrick Swayze, Patrick Dempsey, Richard Gere and Jimmy Fallon, has incorporated his fearlessness and energy onto canvas. Following the tradition of artists like Martin Mull, Viggo Mortensen, and Dennis Hopper, who worked as inventive actors and at the same time developed remarkable narrative and highly engaging artworks, Paoli seems to manage both activities with professionalism and panache. The influence of his time spent in Hollywood on the surfaces of his vibrant and often animated paintings, is apparent from the opening credits. In all his works there is a clear sense of the theatrical; models are often "framed" by curtains of pigment that has been scraped down to the bone, while selectively leaving drips and dashes of disparate marks like a cinematic jump cut that keeps you on the edge of your seat. In many portraits there is a haunting sense of a close-up, where the subject projects a concentrated stare that appears in between the beautiful, built-up layers that give Paoli's work a cutting edge. These highly textured surfaces offer a well-balanced cast of colorful combinations and scripted personalities that communicate directly with the viewer. These expressive and abstract cameo appearances receive their inspiration from an urban contemporary style that finds its roots in the masters.
