Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was a prominent American painter known for his abstract expressionist style, particularly his color field paintings. Born in Latvia (then part of the Russian Empire) and later immigrating to the United States, he became a central figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Rothko's work often featured large, rectangular blocks of color, designed to evoke emotional responses in the viewer.
